Mia Brown-Seguin is a visual artist based in New York State, focused on site-specific installations and contextual art. She is inspired by human relationships with the environment, working from observations of life cycles, identity, and memory. Brown-Seguin considers her intimate connection with place, as well as the socio-political context of the female body within the landscape. In her practice, she uses photography and traditional methods of craft, along with fiber and book-related media, including papermaking, weaving, and alternative photography processes. By incorporating natural materials and found objects, she challenges scientific documentation and redefines the archival preconceptions of the art object.
In 2022, Brown-Seguin attended Wells College Book Arts Center Summer Institute and in 2023 she attended the Montemero Art Residency. She is a member of the The International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA) and will work as a studio assistant at Penland School of Craft in the summer of 2024. Brown-Seguin is a recipient of The Cornell Council of the Arts Individual Grant, The Edith Stone and Walter King Memorial Prize, and the David R. Bean Prize in Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Italy, Spain, NY, MA, IL, and CO. Supplemental to her practice, Brown-Seguin finds joy in her work as an education intern at the Herbert F Johnson Museum.
